Akar is an architecture, landscape and interiors practice in Pune. It was describing itself in the same words as every other studio in the city. We gave it a position nobody else holds, a line that is its own name said in English, and a playbook the studio now pitches from.
Sustainable, timeless, functional, bespoke, thoughtful, holistic. Open any architect's website in Pune and you will find most of them in the first paragraph. They are all true, which is exactly why they don't help. A client can't choose between six studios that describe themselves identically, so they choose on fee.
Akar's work had a real difference hiding in it. The studio treats the land, the approach and the outdoor spaces with the same rigour as the building. In a market where the garden is whatever is left once the money runs out, that is not a detail. It is a position.
The farmhouse, the weekend home and the second place outside the city are where Pune's families spend on space they actually live in. Nobody leads that market with the outdoors. Akar could, without ever sounding like a landscaping firm.
Akar means form. Form follows function is the oldest sentence in architecture, and it stops at what a space does. Life is what actually happens in it. The line does three jobs in four words: it carries the founder's belief that a space designed around you gives something back, it keeps the discipline of drawing nothing without a reason, and it is the studio's own name said in English, so it belongs to Akar in a way a bought phrase never could.
Form follows life.
Most studios start inside and work out. We start at the ground and work in.
The idea that lets Akar lead with landscape without sounding like a landscaping firm. The market treats the outdoors as decoration applied at the end. Akar designs an outside room with everything an inside room is designed with.
Always described in this order: on the site, in the deck, in the room. They are not sub-brands and never get their own logos. They are the order in which Akar thinks, made visible.
The commercial benefit: a client can enter at Ground for a fraction of an architecture fee and end up buying all three. The strategic one: leading with landscape now reads as rigour, not as a smaller ambition.
Every piece of collateral says the spine and at least one pillar. Ground first: the site is the first client. Rooms, not gardens: outdoor space gets the same rigour as indoor space. Nothing decorative: if it has no job, it does not get drawn.
